Paul Rockett, Self Portrait
It was in 1940s Europe that the rigid style of “spotlight” photography finally gave way to a photographic revolution that explored natural lighting, movement and attitude, resulting in a sexier image that eventually became the mainstream in 1960s America. It was Canadian war photographer, Paul Rockett who first adopted this new style and, consequently, single-handedly revolutionized magazine and advertising photography in Canada. Art directors and the viewing public at large were awestruck by this new dynamic approach to the photographic image and Rockett became an overnight success. According to Toronto Life, “aside from Karsh, Rockett was Canada’s only star.”
Rockett’s work now hangs in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Perhaps he is most recognized today for his series of Glenn Gould portraits, one of which was chosen by Canada Post for a limited edition series of commemorative envelopes.
