Douglas Kirkland, Self Portrait
Douglas Kirkland
Born in Toronto, internationally-acclaimed photographer Douglas Kirkland remains a proud Canadian. After apprenticing in New York with the great American photographer Irving Penn, he first became renowned for his work in Look and Life Magazines. Since then he has photographed celebrities from Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Mary Pickford and Audrey Hepburn, to Angelina Jolie, Robert De Niro and John Lennon. His photographs of nudes are works of art. His book, An Evening With Marilyn is a classic. His book of photographs on the filming of Titanic reached #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list—the first time ever for a published collection of photographic studies.
Kirkland exhibits all over Europe and North America, and lectures at the Smithsonian in Washington and at the American Film Institute. He has just launched FREEZE FRAME, a book and exhibition (which recently opened in New York) covering five decades of his motion picture photography.
