Stephen Ibbott, Wrestlers
Stephen Ibbott’s work explores the relationships between technology and contemporary social engagement, while also permitting a technological intervention to be revealed within his painting process. Compositionally, these works resemble the genre of history painting except for their content being contemporary in nature. The Merry Company scenes of 17th Century Netherlandish and Flemmish painters exemplifies another precedent, where the artist views moments of social behaviors through the technological aid of the camera obscura - unwittingly unveiling a standard in the visual documentation that will surface two hundred years later in the form of photography. Likewise, Ibbott’s compositions reveal more than an absurd account of daily life, they reveal the absurdity of our own observational methods. Coming in 2010, a new body of work exploring the technological mimicry of human culture.
