Noelle Elia

Noelle Elia’s unique observations of the cultural landscape engage primarily with public expressions, communications and the objects of popular discourse. Elia’s photographs or simulations of existing images examine the pervasiveness and social role of speaking in the public sphere. By referencing images we recognize - not necessarily in terms of familiarity, but because they capture familiar modes of expression - the artist effectuates a reflexive reading. Perhaps one of the most fascinating consequences of this viewer response is how cultural distinctions in the global market economy tend to blur through references to kitsch and our common intersections within the symbolic order. Further, the sophistication of Elia’s framing encourages an open-ended contextual interpretation by the viewer, a field of experiential relationships existent within the actual environment rather than narrating a specific insight constricted by the photographic boundary.

Elia lives and works in Toronto.
